Baseball is back! And so is poetry! :)

I hope everyone had a fantastic Spring break. I took a few road trips, which gave me a lot of time to read Hunger Games and Going Bovine- two very interesting (and very strange) stories. I love them both!
Now that we're back at JFS, we are celebrating National Poetry Month with a super-cool poetry display. Middle school madness, sadness and sorrow, and tales of fire, friendship, and first loves are just some of the themes you'll find in these poetry collections.
I'm also pretty excited about the return of baseball (GO PHILS!). Sports fans might want to stop by and check out Matt Christopher, our April author of the month. He has written many stories about all kinds of sports, from soccer to snowboarding to hockey.
Best of luck to all the students as the third marking period comes to a close.

Think Spring!

With the first day of Spring right around the corner, the library media center staff has been busy preparing for the last few months of school.

Please be sure to check out the bulletin board outside the library media center. We have added new pictures of the students in Mr. Phinney's 8th grade social studies classes who dressed up for their 1920's Meet-and-Greet and a breakdown (again with pictures) of a slavery station project we did with Mrs. Loew's 7th grade social studies students.

Our author of the month is Sharon Creech and the theme, Native American stories (these include realistic, historical, and fantasy fiction).

I am currently reading The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch by Joseph Delaney, a recommendation from Miss Engle. Usually I am the one persuading her to read in the fantasy genre, but Miss Engle got to this one first and she loved it! So far, so good for me. I'll definitely be ready to booktalk this one for Mr. Giacche's students in a week or so.

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend! I spent a lot of time watching the Olympics (love that freestyle skiing!). We have some books about the history of the Olympics here in the library; The Games of '36 looks very cool. Stop by and check them out!
I did have some time to finish reading Swallowing Stones by Joyce Macdonald. It's a very interesting book that follows two teenagers' struggles after a tragedy. Jenna is a victim and Michael is the one who caused it. As Jenna gets closer to learning the truth, Michael is struggling to keep his secret. Thanks to Mrs. Kish for recommending this one- loved it!

Hi! I would like to second Ms. Foley and wish everyone a safe and happy holiday vacation! December has been a busy month for the library media center; after unpacking lots and lots of books in November, we had some great booktalks and helped with music and science research projects. Also, how could I forget our tons of study hall students (who, by the way, have been wonderful! Hooray!)?
When you get back to school in 2010, stop in to say hi and check out our new author/genre of the month!

We have received (and are almost done processing) our newest shipment of books! We have new fiction books in every genre, though I did pay special attention to Sports Fiction. These books are displayed on top of the stack in the center of the room. Also, our new series fiction has replaced some of our older series on the shelves between the windows.

Please also check out the books by our Newbery-award-winning author of the month, Avi.

Our theme of the month for November is Books to Movies in honor of the movie premiere of New Moon.

Moving Forward

Well, it's the 4th week of school and we have had the opportunity to meet almost all of our students! Thank you to all of the 7th and 8th graders who had class in the library media center last week and so far this week for being respectful of the staff here while we booktalked and gave our library orientation. :-)

I also wanted to let you know that our October theme of the month is the horror genre and our author of the month is Jane Yolen (http://janeyolen.com). Please check out our displays!
